Our client delivers effective gateway and traffic services for their customers. Processing up to 10,000 Lorries per day, 120 ferry crossings, 130 cruise ship calls each year, 335k tonnes of refrigerated cargo, and a vibrant marine leisure sector. It is a 24 x 7 business, facilitating over £120 billion in trade each year


My client is seeking an experienced Senior Estimator to join them on a full-time basis.


The purpose of the role of Senior Estimator is to provide consistently high quality estimating of the cost of construction, maintenance, and other types of projects. Reporting to the Commercial Manager the Senior Estimator works with the project contracting community across Procurement and PMO to co-ordinate all estimating activity through project lifecycles either directly or through the team of quantity surveyors, passing on guidance and training where needed.

The Senior Estimator sets the standard for all policy, process, and governance relating to project contract estimating. They will need to work closely with development and project teams for pre contract estimating to support the project budget-setting process and monitor potential out turn cost against project budgets, forecasts and estimates. The Senior Estimator is a professional role required to work independently and proactively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and to a standard estimating protocol.


Duties of the Post Holder

Develop accurate cost estimates for all projects primarily focused on construction, maintenance, and repair projects • Work closely with the key stakeholder in engineering and other business teams to understand project requirements and identify cost drivers. • Analyse project data, including plans, specifications, and schedules, to develop comprehensive estimates. • Manage and track cost estimates throughout the project lifecycle, adjusting as needed to ensure project success which is aligned to the project Gateway process. • Develop and maintain relationships with suppliers, consultants, and contractors to obtain competitive pricing for goods and services. • Ensuring up to date with industry trends and best practices in estimating. • Assist in the development of project budgets and schedules. • Provide guidance and mentorship to colleagues. • Supporting the Project delivery board in development of Portfolio level estimates for potential future programmes in support of Long-Term Asset Plan and Capital Investment Plan. • Lead the Procurement and PMO function in the development of all relevant estimating policies and processes• Lead specification, appointment, and management of estimating services as required.


Knowledge and experince

Bachelor’s degree in quantity surveying, engineering, construction management, or related field. • Relevant professional qualification related to estimating (RICS, ACostE, or equivalent) • Minimum of 3 years of experience in estimating at a Senior Estimator level, preferably across a broad range of disciplines including construction and in operational environments. Experience of and Practical application of NEC suite of contracts, Earned Value Management and standards such as New Rules of Measurement. • Practical understanding of construction methodologies, materials, and equipment. • Proficient in construction estimating software and tools. • Experience managing and leading a team of estimators. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. • Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. • Ability to constructively challenge and influence senior stakeholders. • Able to create strong collaborative working relationships. • Able to pull together as one team to deliver the best results. • Able to respect, trust and empower other members of the team. • Able to prioritise safety, security and sustainability.
