Project Engineer – Civils

Salary £35k - £45k DOE

Based in Dover

Job Purpose

In this role you will be developing and delivering civil engineering development and maintenance projects from inception to completion in live operational port environments. You will be responsible for undertaking and/or management of the design; and subsequent project and contract management of; construction and Engineering works in the port environment. You will work in a team focusing on developing and delivering Engineering projects to maintain and expand the port infrastructure. You will also support other team members of the in-house Engineering team with design and delivery of port development and maintenance projects.

Duties of the Post Holder

To undertake, prepare and/or commission/manage thereof designs, specifications, drawings, risk and environmental assessments for the execution of civil & structural maintenance and/or new Engineering works and other port related works which are to be carried out by contract.

To undertake condition inspections and surveys of civil engineering and building assets.

To act as ‘Supervisor’ or ‘Project Manager’ or ‘Employer/Client’ under the relevant NEC suite of contracts, managing works and activities of contractors and consultants alike and associated project finances, forecasts and risks.

To manage health and safety on construction projects in line with current legislation and best practice and to act in the capacity of Principal Designer as and when appointed by the General Manager, Engineering.

To assess and evaluate contractors, consultants and suppliers against commercial, technical, safety and quality competency criteria and make subsequent recommendations to the Board for appointment.

To liaise with architects, consultants and quantity surveyors appointed to take control of a project on the Board's behalf, including the formulation of the "brief/scope" and to monitor the progress of work on site in respect of the brief/scope, time, quality, safety, financial targets and operational constraints.

To manage the activities of the Board’s inspecting staff to ensure contractual compliance with the specifications, drawings, risk and environmental assessments. To ensure that site records are maintained to enable works to be measured and evaluated.

To furnish reports, regularly for financial and progress reports on contract works, and as required for your manager or supervisor.

To provide estimates and feasibility studies for proposed new schemes and alterations to existing assets, including production of infrastructure development strategies and associated delivery and project management plans.

The Ideal Fit (Knowledge & Experience)

BSc/BEng (or acceptable equivalent) or above in appropriate technical discipline

Minimum of 3 years relevant post-graduate work experience. of managing and delivering civil or structural Engineering projects from inception through feasibility, design and implementation to project completion utilising NEC forms of contract

A demonstrable understanding of current CDM Regulations and relevant Health and Safety legislation/guidance.

Good user skills in Microsoft Office 365 and desirably AutoCAD

Must hold a valid driving license and have use of own vehicle

Good background liaising with Engineering Consultants, Contractors and Clients, ensuring they understand the required customer outcomes and the impact of poor service and communication during delivery on their reputation, that of Engineering, the Port and the wider Port community.

Forward plan and monitor own, contractors and direct reports work against milestones and make prompt interventions to keep work on track.
